Troubleshooting

Looking for help with your Telephone service? Questions about your bill? You'll find your answers here!

How do I set up voice mail?

Dial *99 or if you have an unlisted number dial *97 then *99. You will be prompted to enter your mail box number, which is your phone number. You will then be prompted to enter your password*, which is your phone number until you change it. Once you have done this you can check your messages from any area by dialing your voice mailbox access number. (See our reference guide section to view a Residential - Telephone Reference Guide )

*Note: Voicemail must be initiated from home.  When you access your voicemail for the first time, Eastlink recommends you change your password.

How can I change the amount of rings before my voice mail picks up?

Press *94 and listen for a special dial tone, (three quick beeps followed by a regular dial tone). Enter the number of rings you want to hear before Call Answer takes a message listen for the confirmation tone (two quick beeps followed by a dial tone) and then hang up.

*Note: This option is not applicable for Eastlink Business Service customers

What are the necessary steps to ensure that I am able to access my telephone features?

Make sure that your phone is switched to tone and not pulse*. If phone is in pulse mode it will work as if it was a rotary telephone and will not be able to access the features.

*Note:  Not all phones have a pulse mode. All newer model phones without a tone/pulse button automatically default to tone mode.

How can I block unwanted callers?

Call Screen will easily block unwanted calls. To screen particular telephone numbers pick up the receiver and wait for dial tone. Press *60, wait through the 2-3 second delay, and follow the prompts. You can also screen all unknown name and number callers by pressing *77 instead of *60.

For Eastlink Business customers, Selective Call Rejection (SCR) allows you to selectively program a list of up to 12 Directory Numbers (phone numbers) from which calls are to be rejected or blocked.  Incoming calls that are on the list are routed to an announcement informing the caller that the called party did not wish to receive the call.  Press *80, wait through the 2-3 second display and follow the prompts.

Why can't I hear a dial tone?

Make sure the cords are securely connected to the telephone and the telephone jacks. If your using a cordless telephone check to see if the battery is charged. You may want to check to make sure it is not the phone by trying another phone in the jack.

If you hear a special tone, it is telling you that someone is trying to call you. This feature is called Call Waiting. To answer the incoming call, press and release the receiver button on your telephone*. Your first caller will automatically be put on hold while you answer the second call. You can alternate between callers by pressing and releasing the receiver button. To end either call, you can press the 'Link' key or quickly press and release the receiver button.

* Note: If your phone has a 'Link' or 'Flash' key, you can use this instead.
