Eastlink Television to broadcast Allt Memorial Soccer Tournament

Halifax, Nova Scotia - Eastlink Television is broadcasting the 4th Annual Sheila and Stephenie Allt Memorial Soccer Tournament on May 22nd. The tournament is in memory of Sheila and Stephenie Allt, a mother and daughter, who were killed tragically in a car accident on October 7th, 2002. The two were returning home from a school soccer game in Tantallon when their car hydroplaned on the rain soaked highway.

"When Stephen Allt approached us inquiring if we would televise a tournament game or two we were only too delighted to offer our support," said Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television. "This epitomises the definition of community and as the local community channel we wanted to bring the love of the game that Shelia and Stephenie had to as many Maritimers as possible."

The tournament, held at the North Mainland Common, features 50 games from 30 teams from U-12 to U-18 girls from Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Eastlink Television will broadcast the U-14 gold-medal game at 1:00 p.m. followed by the U-16 title game at 3:00 p.m.

Kathy Comeau, a tournament volunteer said, "The tournament's goal is to bring together young female soccer players early in the season, to have fair play, and above all enjoy the spirit of sport. Both Sheila and Stephenie loved soccer, they loved the community that supported the sport, and they loved the friendships that developed from the sport. It's those friendships that will each year tirelessly work to grow this tournament."

The girls-only tournament was conceived by two of Stephenie's friends, Mallory Comeau and Kate Elliot to honour the memory of the two women. Shelia Allt's widow Stephen has and continues to play an active role in the tournament each year.
