News ReleaseMount Allison University holds Wireless 'Show and Tell'December 7, 2004 SACKVILLE, NB - Mount Allison University held an official Wireless 'Show and Tell' today to show off its recent campus-wide wireless initiative and thank the generous donors that made the project a reality. EastLink donated $100,000 towards the project. "EastLink is pleased to support Mount Allison University in the development of this wireless access network, " said Lee Bragg, EastLink Co-CEO and Allisonian." As a local company with a close relationship with Mount A, it was a natural choice for us to support a project which will create new and exciting opportunities for students now and into the future." Mount Allison University President, Dr. Kenneth Ozmon, is pleased with the University's recent technological advance and EastLink's generous support of it. He said, "EastLink's support of the Wireless project makes a direct impact on our ability to deliver an exceptional, nationally recognized educational experience, that now includes campus-wide wireless access. We thank them for their ongoing support. By exposing our students to this kind of leading edge technology and encouraging 'm-learning' (mobile learning), we are preparing them for their future endeavours in the workplace and in life." Helmut Becker, director of computing services, explained the uses of the wireless technology at the event. He said, "The network provides wireless access in all campus facilities, including residences and academic and administrative buildings. Even Jennings Dining Hall now has wireless Internet access. Students, faculty, and staff are able to go online anywhere on campus." Mount Allison's wireless initiative is the first in Atlantic Canada of this magnitude. High-tech company, Chantry Networks, and the University's computing services staff worked on the project over the spring and summer of 2004 and the wireless project was up and running across campus earlier this fall. The arrival of SWAN (the Scholar's Wireless Access Network) has made technology more readily available to students, faculty, and staff. It is a significant step towards the University's objectives to increase and promote mobile learning among its students and faculty. Wireless access will enhance teaching, learning, and research methods at Mount A. A truly Maritime company, EastLink is the fifth largest cable company in Canada and was the first to offer customers local telephone service over a state-of-the-art digital network. EastLink provides a range of communication, entertainment & advertising services to business and residential customers across the Maritimes. EastLink is owned by John Bragg, Mount Allison graduate, honorary degree holder, and Chancellor Designate. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT: Paula Sibley Helmut Becker |
