FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 9, 2008
Halifax, Nova Scotia - From December 10th through December 21st, 2361 blood donors, including Eastlink employees, community partners and individuals across Nova Scotia and PEI took one hour out of their day to save a life. With each donation having the power to save up to three lives, these donors collectively saved the lives of over 7000 hospital patients over the holiday season.
"Eastlink continues to show a deep commitment to the community and to those in need and we thank them for their outstanding support during Eastlink Blood Donor Days," says Peter MacDonald, Director, Donor and Clinic Services, Atlantic. "There were days when our clinics were operating at maximum capacity and we thank the blood donors in Nova Scotia and PEI for sharing their most precious gift this holiday season. We hope that this kind of enthusiasm and generosity continues throughout the year."
On December 17, Eastlink devoted its flagship show, Eastlink Magazine to educate its viewers about the importance of blood donation. Many of the stories explained the constant need for blood through the eyes of blood recipients and their families.
The Eastlink show DocTalk looked at the challenges that face the blood system and the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network. The Community Matters Notice Board featured interesting facts about blood and how patients depend on a stable blood supply year-round.
"We're thrilled with the success of Eastlink Blood Donor Days and that we were able to help make a difference in the lives of so many," says Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television. "The people in Nova Scotia and PEI are generous with their time and know that giving blood is one of the most direct ways to help a hospital patient in need. Eastlink is proud to support Canadian Blood Services and encourages all of those people, including the many participants who donated blood for the first time, to continue giving their life-saving gift."

Canadian Blood Services is a national not-for-profit charitable organization that manages the blood supply in all Canadian provinces and territories (except Québec) and oversees OneMatch - the Stem Cell and Marrow Network. A dedicated team of 4,800 staff and 17,000 volunteers enable Canadian Blood Services to operate 40 permanent collection sites and more than 20,000 donor clinics annually. While Canadian Blood Services is a non-governmental organization, it receives operational funding from the Provincial and Territorial Ministers of Health, and is regulated by Health Canada.
