FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 7, 2007
Halifax, Nova Scotia - Eastlink and Canadian Blood Services are joining forces again this holiday season for the third annual Eastlink Blood Donor Days. From December 10th through December 21st, Eastlink will be working with Canadian Blood Services to raise awareness about the importance of donating blood. Blood donor clinics will be held in communities throughout the Maritimes to help collect the 77,000 red blood cells, plasma and platelet donations that are needed nationally between now and January 2nd, to meet hospital demand.
"During this season of giving it is important to help remind people to give one of life's most generous gifts - the gift of blood donation. We are pleased to help deliver that message with Canadian Blood Services during Eastlink Blood Donor Days," says Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television.
On December 17th, Eastlink Television will devote Eastlink Magazine, a one-hour program that brings a fresh look at the people and places of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, to stories about the importance of blood donation. The program will bring to life the need for blood through feature interviews and stories with those who give this life saving gift and those who receive it.
Other special programming will include a one-hour Doc Talk with Dr. John Gillis. Dr. Gillis will sit down with Peter MacDonald, Regional Director, Donor, Clinic Services Atlantic, to look at some of the current and future challenges that face the blood system and the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network. During Blood Donor Days Eastlink Television's Community Matters Notice Board will encourage people to book an appointment to donate blood and feature interesting facts about blood and how patients depend on a stable blood supply year-round.
"A sense of community comes from a sense of caring," says Peter MacDonald, "and once again Eastlink is demonstrating that they are committed to helping hospital patients in need during a challenging time of year."
The holiday season can be a difficult time to collect blood with many people busy getting ready for the holidays. Hospitals continue to draw on the supply of blood and blood products, while donors, preoccupied with holiday activities, do not continue to replenish the supply. Eastlink and Canadian Blood Services want to remind people that the need for blood never stops - it does not take a holiday.
