New Glasgow, Nova Scotia - The spirit of Christmas could be heard throughout Pictou County this year thanks to overwhelming support for the Pictou County Christmas Fund. The annual fundraiser televised on Eastlink raised more than $76,000 in donations representing an increase of 12 percent from 2006 donations.
"Giving back to the communities where we work and live is especially important during the holidays when the need is so great," said Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television. "We were overwhelmed by the generosity of local residents who gave more than ever to this important fundraiser. Being a part of these fundraisers and helping charitable organizations raise money that is returned back to the local community to help children and families is really what the season is all about."
Funds raised during the telethon will be to purchase food and gifts for needy families this holiday season.
"The people of Pictou County contributed greatly to the fund and over 900 families were able to be assisted through this Christmas Sharing Telethon. There are many talented performers and so many volunteers that donate their time and energy to this very worthwhile endeavor at Christmas time," said Rhonda Brown, Chairperson -Pictou County Christmas Fund.
Brown added, "Eastlink Television and CKEC 94.1 Radio bring the show to life for the people of Pictou County. Using both mediums allows us to reach so many people. The telethon would not be possible without Eastlink Television and the many volunteers and equipment they alone bring to the production."
