Eastlink Television ventures into new production territory by partnering with Casino Nova Scotia to broadcast the first locally produced Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament.
For two days in February, 80 Texas Hold 'Em Poker enthusiasts from Atlantic Canada gathered at Casino Nova Scotia's Poker Room to battle and bluff until one person remained. The winner walked away with approximately $17,000 plus an all expenses paid trip to Regina, where he/she will compete in four other tournaments. All $57,500 in enrolment fees was paid out to contestants.
As in other internationally televised poker tournaments, Eastlink Television inserted card cams in the playing table. The card cams enable the viewing audience to see the gamer's hole cards. "Implementing Card Cams allows us to continue and grow as an innovative local telecaster. Coupled with being quick to market with such Sports Entertainment as televised poker, which has taken the television world by storm, we believe reinforces Eastlink Television's commitment to bringing our audience the best viewing experience," says Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television.
"The popularity of poker has definitely spiked during this no-hockey year and the response we've experienced from new and seasoned players has been overwhelming," explains Ann Secord, VP Marketing, Casino Nova Scotia. "We are excited to bring this very popular game to Atlantic Canadians and will do so on an on-going basis. It's a natural add-on to the already-popular Casino Nova Scotia experience."
On April 9 at 6:30 p.m., Eastlink Television will broadcast a 30 minute pre-show leading up to the one-hour Championship Game at 7 p.m.
