SYDNEY, NS - Eastlink Co-CEO Dan McKeen announced today the company is investing $4.3 million in its Sydney digital fiber network to bring local telephone to the area. The investment is on top of $7 million invested in an underwater diverse fiber link between Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island.
"This Network upgrade will offer Eastlink customers local telephone choice to Sydney and surrounding communities," says Dan McKeen, Co-CEO, Eastlink. "Choice is great for residents and businesses and we feel it will be great for Sydney."
Construction began in the middle of May, with an anticipated completion date of Spring 2006. Residents choosing to switch to Eastlink Telephone can enjoy free installation and are able to keep their existing phone number, jacks and directory listing.
"Eastlink's announcement, which represents a very significant investment in local communications infrastructure, is certainly positive news," said Mayor John Morgan of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. "The modern economy depends upon the quality of communications infrastructure and this commitment by Eastlink will lead to a greater level of choice for residents in this region."
"Here we have compelling indications that we are moving forward in the 21st century, an age of increased benefits of technology! We know Eastlink has a vision for growth and is creating, in Cape Breton, advantages and new opportunities," says Bruce Meloney, President of the Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce. "From a business prospective, it is good news, giving the business community the option of choice and creating a more competitive environment, which is always good for business. From a community perspective," says Meloney "It speaks to Eastlink's belief in doing business in Cape Breton, shows us that major companies see our area as having growth potential and worthy of investment. We welcome the investment, the jobs that will be created, the opportunities that will be formed and we congratulate Eastlink on its vision and its commitment to progress."
"Telephone competition increases the attractiveness of Sydney to businesses that create employment opportunities. Eastlink customers benefit from additional value when they sign up for an Eastlink Bundle," said McKeen. In addition, any Eastlink bundle customer can add a Rogers Wireless Plan to their account and receive a 15 per cent discount on select wireless airtime plans.
