FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 14, 2006
Halifax, Nova Scotia - Eastlink and Canadian Blood Services are teaming up again for Eastlink Blood Donor Days. From December 15 through December 22, Eastlink will be working with Canadian Blood Services to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation. Clinics will be held in communities throughout the Maritimes to help Canadian Blood Services collect over 10,000 units of blood it requires between December 1 and January 2, to ensure the needs of all hospital patients are met.
"For three years, we have been partnering with Canadian Blood Services to raise awareness about the importance of giving the gift of life. We are thrilled that we have seen an increase in the number of blood donations from Maritimers in each of the three years," said Michael Smith, director of Eastlink Television.
To kick-off Eastlink Blood Donor Days, Eastlink is hosting a blood donor clinic at the Halifax Forum on Friday, December 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, Eastlink Television will launch a public service announcement and broadcast dedicated programming that will highlight the importance of blood donation throughout the eight day period. The channel will also feature interesting blood facts throughout the week.
"Working with Eastlink over the past few years has been very successful, and we are delighted to continue this partnership. It's important that Atlantic Canadians understand the importance of blood donation, and Eastlink Blood Donor Days helps us do this," said Peter MacDonald, Regional Director, Canadian Blood Services Atlantic. "Every minute of every day, someone in Canada needs blood, and thanks to our donors, those products are there to save lives."
This is the third year Eastlink has partnered with Canadian Blood Services to spread the message about the importance of blood donation during the holiday season. Last year, Eastlink helped raised awareness and as a result, Maritime clinics exceeded their targets by 32 per cent and ensured Canadian Blood Services collected 12,5000 units of blood required to ensure the needs of all hospital patients were met throughout the holiday season.
The holiday season can be a difficult time to collect blood and hospitals continue to draw on the supply of blood and blood products.
