Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island - Eastlink, in partnership with the PEI Rocket will honour the Canadian Military at the January 19th QMJHL Friday Night Hockey game between the PEI Rocket and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Eastlink Television will broadcast the game from the Charlottetown Civic Centre to its service areas throughout Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Eastlink is working with officials from the Canadian military to broadcast the game to troops serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan. This special television broadcast will include greetings from members of each hockey club, politicians, Military Family Resource Centre, families and friends.
"Whether at home or abroad, everyone enjoys a good hockey game," said Michael Smith, Director of Eastlink Television. "Eastlink Television wanted to show our viewers at home and abroad, that we support our troops overseas and are wishing for their safe return home. We thought that by broadcasting this game to the troops serving in Kandahar, it would allow them to enjoy one of the comforts of home."
The PEI Rocket have organized a pre-game ceremony featuring Canadian forces members, their families and special dignitaries, including Lieutenant Colonel Glen Moriarity, Commanding Officer of the Prince Edward Island Regiment.
"We are thrilled Eastlink Television joined us in this special tribute by devoting the broadcast to honouring our Canadian Forces," said Gary Connelly, Vice President, PEI Rocket. "With many of family members preparing to head to Afghanistan in the coming weeks and months we thought it was important to thank them for their bravery and wish them well."
In late January and early February, more than 1,200 soldiers from 2nd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment from Gagetown will leave for Afghanistan. This contingent will include hundreds of reservists from across Atlantic Canada, including troops from Halifax, Sydney and Charlottetown.
