MRS is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is free of charge for local calls. Regular long-distance rates apply for long distance calls. Calls placed through MRS are entirely confidential, with no record of the conversation retained. Relay operators are professionally trained and follow a strict code of ethics.

To place a call, select whether you’re calling another TTY device or a voice phone, then dial the number below:

• For calls from voice to TTY: dial 1-800-855-0511
• For calls from TTY to voice: dial 711
• For calls from TTY to TTY: dial 1-800-855-1155

Getting started:

Follow the instructions below to place a TTY to voice call using MRS.

1. Dial 711. The relay operator will answer with “Relay Service, [agent’s name] speaking,” followed by “GA” for go ahead.
2. Type in the area code and number you’d like to call, and then type GA. You aren’t required to give the operator your name or the name of the person you’re trying to call, but doing so helps the operator connect you.
3. The relay operator will dial the number and let you know how the connection is progressing, (for example, “RINGING 1…2…3”), tell you when someone answers.

Tips for TTY users using Message Relay Service:

• Give the relay operator your name and the name of the person you are calling to make it easier to connect you.
• Give the relay operator the call recipient’s area code, even when it is a local call.
• If you need to leave a message, include “1-800-855-0511” as part of your message, along with your area code and phone number.

1. Dial 1-800-855-0511. The relay operator will answer saying, “Relay service, [agent’s name] speaking,” followed by “GA” (for go ahead).
2. Give the relay operator the area code and number you’d like to call. You aren’t required to give the operator your name or the name of the person you’re trying to call, but doing so helps the operator connect you.
3. The relay operator will dial the number and let you know what’s happening, as you won’t be able to hear the line ring.
4. The relay operator will tell you when the TTY user has answered and read what is typed, followed by “go ahead”. Go ahead is your cue to begin speaking.

Tips for TTY users using Message Relay Service:

• Let the relay operator know at the beginning of the call if you’ve used MRS before and are familiar with how it works.
• Remember to speak directly to the TTY user, not to the relay operator.
• Speak slower than usual so the relay operator can type what you’re saying, word for word.
• Spell any names that are part of your conversation.
• Always say “go ahead” when you’re finished speaking, so the TTY user will know when it’s their turn to respond.
